To prepare pupils to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing world by developing a curiosity and a willingness to explore.

To enable students to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern, construction and different materials and processes.
To enable students to see how they can become involved in shaping their environments through art and design activities. Students learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. They also explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers.
To encourage students to understand the world visually, instead of restricting learning and the acquisition of knowledge to words and numbers alone.
To enable students to observe the subject matter of the real-world scene they are drawing from and thus make them better observers of detail in the world around them. Developing observational skills through art facilitates the student’s visual sensitivity to the world. .

Showing students a wide variety of artistic movements from a wide range of sources, encouraging them to analyse and question the meaning and motives behind works of art.
Exposing students to different cultures. This means offering gallery trips and using links with Bournemouth Arts Institute as well as showing different artefacts and designs.
Enabling students to express ideas within the framework of the theme.
Recognising individuality, students are encouraged to make their own decisions and develop ideas fully.
Creating set-ups, exhibitions and installations that stimulate the senses and enable students to see that the ordinary can be extra ordinary.
Encouraging students to take risks through experimental use of media and materials.
Engaging students in discussion about their work. In KS3 this will involve regular feedback with ideas for progression. Similar discussions take place with KS4 but will involve more in depth tutorials.

A sense of value and self-worth.
